Tonight we held our National Day of Prayer event at the Historic Pole Green Church site. I have passed this particular landmark countless times before in my rounds around Hanover County for various reasons, and although I have admired it from afar, I have never been more aware of its full beauty until I was standing under its glistening peaks and praying to God for our Country, our government, our church, and our families.
As I was praying for the unity, purpose, and direction of the church, it dawned on me that perhaps our churches would best serve the community around us if we were to become like this church. A “church” by its truest definition…a church without walls or doors. Sound strange? Not to me. You see, without walls or doors to hold us in and keep us focused on our little world of God and each other, it gives us a clear view of what lies outside our sometimes overly-protective, limiting, and sometimes blinding walls. I pray that within that view we become aware of God at work outside of our walls, out in the streets of our community, and in all of creation. Just as we have been looking for where He is at work within our walls, perhaps we will be moved to turn our attention outward and try to discover where He is at work outside of our walls and join Him there.

Having no doors or windows allows for one more opportunity, it gives others an opportunity to see in. Now, because some of what we do should be in a corporate setting with other believers, I pray that despite our comfort within these walls, what the seekers will see is a group of authentic, God-seeking individuals living transparent lives of worship.
