Once again, I have been challenged. Ugh!! In this instance, it is uncomfortable because I know that it must cause a change in me and quite honestly the way that I approach some long held beliefs about the way to approach ministry; especially how we present the gospel at Easter and Christmas.
These special times of the year are so dear to most Christians and those who have had some introduction to the Christ and His story. And yet, those who are unchurched, the ones we do this for, may look at our costumed presentations and leave wondering, “What was that all about?”
That is far from the reaction that I want. It is far from the reason that I do what I do. I want people leaving and feeling like they need this Jesus we sing about and worship. Not because of some slick over-stylized production alone, but because we have presented Christ and His story in a way that is approachable, relevant, and excellent.
Don't get me wrong, there is still a very appropriate place during these times of year to utilize the costumes, props, sets, etc. to present the gospel. But something must change and we must expand on that age-old concept of the seasonal musical.
Now what? I have one Easter musical already written and another rolling around in my heart and brain. It is indeed back to the drawing board on the first and excitedly gives me a refreshed directive for the next. Please join with me in prayer as I once again travel outside of the proverbial box to discover new and exciting ways to tell the greatest story ever told.
